DNS is a method of naming computers or any resources connected to internet so that it will be easy for the computers to find each other. Most important task of DNS is to translate domain names into binary identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of addressing these devices worldwide. In easy words DNS can be explained as a phone book which translate human friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. Because of the Domain Name System it is possible to assign domain names to group of Internet users in a meaningful manner, free of physical location of both the users. Internet domain names are comparatively more easy to remember than confusing IP addresses, like 2001:db8:1f70::999:de8:7648:6e8 from IPv6 to 208.77.188.166 from IPv4. Each time a domain name is used the DNS server changes the name into its corresponding IP address.
You can say that a DNS server translate information and converts into IP adress. IT sounds simple but it gets complicated because of the following reasons:
1. There are billions of DNS server requests every single day. Just look at this way a single person can send a million DNS server request per day. Adding to the woes there are billions of people using Internet every day.
2. Domain names and IP adress both change on daily basis and at the same rate new ones are created also.
3. There are billions of IP adress in use and most of the machines have human readable names.
Why IP addresses are important? Its because they help to organize everything on the net. That’s why each computer or any other electronic device that connects to the internet or any local network has its own IP adress. Only if IP adress is included with the request the DNS server provides the right information. Without IP adress there will be no return adress for the information requested. A ukdedicated servers always has a static IP adress so that it will be easily found by other machines to locate it. Even if the systems change their IP adress other machines still be able to find them as long as they have set up their DNS servers properly. Modem usually found in home computers has an IP adress assigned to it every time you dial in. for every session the IP address is unique and no two can be the same.
